eye exams
Many causes of sight loss are preventable if they are caught early. Regular eye tests are the best way to do this. Having an eye test at least once every two years should be part of everyone’s health care routine.
Here at The EyeSpace, our consultant surgeons carry out extensive eye health checks:
- Diagnosis and management of eye disorders
- Performing refractive tests to determine if a patient needs prescription lenses
- Prescribing glasses
- Creating a treatment plan to treat any eye condition
Management of
Keratoconus
Keratoconus is a progressive disorder in which the cornea thins and bulges outward like a cone. This cone-shaped cornea distorts light as it enters the eye thus creating blurry images and sensitivity to light and glare.
Keratoconus often affects young adults. The Vision gradually gets worse over time and is thus advised to seek medical intervention as early as possible to prevent complete loss of vision.
At EyeSpace we offer the following management care for keratoconus:
- Corneal crosslinking
- Corneal transplant
- Scleral Contact Lenses
specialised Scleral
contact lenses
Scleral lenses are specialised contact lenses that are used specifically in patients with irregular corneas such as keratoconus as well as high astigmatism. Scleral lenses are large-diameter rigid gas permeable lenses that rest on the sclera thus the name ‘scleral’ lens. They are filled with liquid saline before inserting into the eye, keeping the eye’s surface moist.
To assist in the designing and fitting of Scleral lenses we use technologies such as:
These techniques are used to map the contour of your eye making the design of the lens more accurate and precise. Our lenses are imported from New Zealand.
A properly fit scleral lens provides:
- Excellent vision quality that is unattainable with spectacles and soft contact lenses
- Greater comfort and long wearing time
Management of
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a condition that causes permanent vision loss due to a build-up of pressure in the eye that damages the optic nerve at the back of the eye. This condition is commonly known as the silent thief of sight, as visual loss is gradual and starts peripherally. Early detection is very important.
Dr Valiallah uses the following diagnostic tools:
- Contact Tonometry to measure eye pressure
- Visual field tests which provide detailed mapping of the visual field showing changes that are not noticed by the patient
- Gonioscopy which is an assessment of the angle of the eye where the iris meets the cornea
- OCT (optical coherence tomography) provides cross sectional images of the nerve using light waves which demonstrates actual nerve damage
Treatment of Glaucoma:
- Eye drops
- Surgery
- Laser therapy
